Elizabeth Hurley thinks women should do ‘whatever they want’ when it comes to fashion

Elizabeth Hurley wants everyone to know that she’s been working on balance, just like the rest of us. There are days when the fans go find her in a bikini in the caribbean and then there are other days when she is ‘in very scruffy gardening clothes’ at her home in the UK

At 57, Hurley was hustle the internet with her Instagram posts generating a bit of positivity from her followers for not following societal norms when it comes to fashion – and that’s where the balance also comes in. “I look at myself with one eye” , she explains to SheKnows. “I know I don’t wear today what I wore when I was 25. And I could if I wanted to. And if I wanted to, I would. But I don’t want to, because I know someone 25 years old, it’s their clothes. And I know it’s not my clothes. I feel perfectly fine with it.

Just because Hurley’s personal philosophy leans toward altering her fashion choices, she doesn’t think anyone should feel “judged” for what they wear— let’s drop this ageism for good. “It’s completely absurd if people think they can’t put on a bikini and enjoy the beach because people might think their body looks too old,” Hurley remarks. “I mean, it’s just obscene. It’s a terrible point of view. That’s why the actress tells everyone that “women should do whatever they want” when it comes to style. If that wasn’t enough, she points out, “And damn anyone who criticizes them.”

This stimulating point of view that Hurley offers is also visible on screen in her last holiday movie, Christmas in Paradise. It’s a follow up to the 2021 hit Santa Claus is back, with Kelsey Grammer, but this time they can do it on the tropical island of Nevis. Like any smart businesswoman, Hurley made sure her character, Joanna, had plenty of chic and colorful items of her own. Elizabeth Hurley Beach line. “As soon as I heard Caribbean, I was like, ‘I’m going to make my own costumes,'” she laughs. “I have a warehouse full of them.”

Joanna is a new mom trying to figure out where she stands between her high-profile career and motherhood. “She wants to be in the heart of the matter. But she also wants to stay home and play babies,” says Hurley. “Now any woman who has had a child knows this terrible attraction you have. You want to be your old self, but you want to be your new self. She admits her character goes through “quite a journey” in christmas in paradise, which is juxtaposed with all the family hijinks and the drama with their father, played by Grammer, who deals with his own life-changing news. Will Joanna know how to tick all the boxes expected of her – a beautiful marriage, a pretty baby and a great career?

As women, we’re meant to try to have it all, but Hurley realized during the 2020 pandemic lockdown that she didn’t need to project the perfect life. She ended up enjoying her time instead of “to be forced to stay at home.” She notes: “It was the first time in 30 years that I was allowed to stay in my country home without pointing out that I was out of work, that I should have fought for this and fought for that. And just being told, ‘Well, you can’t, you have to stay home.’ It took a huge level of pressure off.

The moment in time gave her a gift that took away”a huge load of guilt” of his life. “I now feel like I’m a much happier person having fun working and having a more guilt-free rest when I’m not,” Hurley reveals. This is why she associated with her character in christmas in paradise because they both felt free to make those “brave” decisions. She now rejoices to be “home with [her] dogs and [her] family, gardening, cooking and reading [her] book.” That’s something that suits Hurley just fine, thank you very much. “And I don’t care if you think I’m boring because, guess what? I like it,” she sums up.
