Raleigh, North Carolina “February is the month of love, isn’t it? Yes! But more than that, it’s also heart health month. When my sister mentioned that she would be planning the fundraiser (spoiler alert: she far exceeded her fundraising goal of $10,000!) for the American Heart Association‘s Go Red For Women initiative, I couldn’t wait to help raise awareness. So yeah, the red outfit and heart-shaped accessories were fabulous, and so was the company (watch the video to see how my 5-year-old niece Bryce “takes care of her heart” – but I also learned a lot about how women can show love for themselves and the women we love!
Women face very unique heart health challenges. The most obvious is that we take care of others, that we forget to take care of ourselves! It’s common knowledge that healthy habits lead to a healthy heart, but actively taking care of yourself is a whole different story. Lynn Mason, CEO and President of Broadstep Health, said it perfectly during her speech at the event: “You can’t fill someone else’s glass if yours is empty.”
The most shocking thing I learned, however, is that the signs of a heart attack show up differently in women than in men. Women experience sudden fatigue, dizziness and chest pain. (Sounds like another manic Monday for any woman, doesn’t it?) Kidding aside, it’s a shocking statistic that more than one in three women currently suffer from some form of heart disease. .
Lynn Mason will also be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to help and honor people with heart disease and will host the next fundraiser in April. Stay tuned for more on how you can get involved and help raise awareness about this unique women’s issue. Visit www.heart.org to learn more.
