As the winner of last month’s PGA Professional Championship, Jesse Mueller is the proud leader of the PGA of America’s #TeamOf20 club pros who have the chance to go head-to-head with the best in the world at this week’s PGA Championship. . He may not appeal to fans of the Tiger/Rory/Spieth duo, but that doesn’t mean the 39-year-old from Scottsdale, Arizona can’t make a splash.
Starting the par-4 10th hole at Southern Hills on that first round Thursday afternoon, Mueller found the fairway off the tee and left himself 102 with his approach…which he then dug for the eagle 2 It’s as lively as you’ll get from an announcer on Thursday as Scott Van Pelt gave the shot the royal treatment with a vintage “Welcome to the contest!”
With that eagle, Mueller started his day with a quick two-under and worked his way into the top five in the standings despite a relatively late 1:47 p.m. start.
Dressed in a bright purple outfit representing his school, Grand Canyon University, where he is the general manager of the school-owned course and a volunteer assistant for the men’s and women’s teams, Mueller was able to celebrate the moment with his wife, Jesse. She’s on the sack this week in Tulsa, just like she was when Mueller won the PGA Professional Championship last month in Austin.
Fun fact: they had their birthday dinner at a Domino’s Pizza after finishing their tour late on a Sunday.
