Six for six! Sun Devils close Thunderbird Invitational with great fanfare


TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devils put an exclamation mark on the final day of the Thunderbird Invitational, winning each of the six games they played Sunday at the Whiteman Tennis Center to officially close out the team’s fall season.

For the third consecutive day, Giulia Morlet and Marianna Argyrokastriti won their respective singles matches. They were the only two Sun Devils to go undefeated in singles action throughout the weekend.

Morlet took it up a notch – she was the only Sun Devil to be perfect in both singles and doubles, winning all six matches she appeared in.

Here’s how the Devils fared on Day 3.

For the first time all weekend, the Sun Devils swept their first two doubles matches in the morning session, completing the perfect 3-0 weekend for the Morlet/Gallagher tandem.

Although the Sun Devils only released a quartet of participants for the Thunderbird Invitational, Dominique Turkovic and Patricija Spaka remained in action this week competing at the ITA Fall Nationals in San Diego.

After a first-round loss, the Sun Devil duo were moved to the consolation draw – and didn’t lose the rest of the way. On Sunday, the two were crowned champions of the women’s doubles consolation draw after beating Cal’s Jessica Alsola/Katja Wiersholm (6-2, 6-3) in the final.

One of 32 doubles teams nationwide selected to compete in the announced Fall Championships, here’s a day-by-day look at how Turkovic/Spaka marched to a championship.

Wednesday, November 2: The Sun Devil duo were beaten in the first round of the doubles by second seed Fiona Crawley/Carson Tanguilig of North Carolina (7-5, 6-4).

Thursday, November 3: Now in the consolation bracket, Turkovic and Spaka won. Brandelyn Fulgenzi/Lauren Fulgenzi of the University of the Incarnate Word (6-3, 3-6, 10-4).

Friday, November 4: Turkovic/Spaka defeated. Iowa State’s Kajuru/Kezuka (7-5, 6-3) in the consolation quarterfinals.

Saturday, November 5: Turkovic/Spaka triumphed in a formidable battle in three sets against Maquet/Quiterio of North Carolina (6-4, 4-6, 10-8) to advance to the final of the consolation draw.

Sunday, November 6: Champions! Turkovic/Spaka slide past Cal’s Alsola/Wiersholm (6-2, 6-3) to win the women’s doubles consolation draw at the ITA Fall Nationals.

With the fall season officially coming to an end, attention is turning to the Sun Devils’ spring season, with the team expected to announce a schedule in the coming weeks.
