Southeastern opens season with win over LSUA

HAMMOND, Louisiana – The University of Southeast Louisiana women’s basketball team defeated the LSUA Lady Generals at the University Center Monday night in the season opener in Hammond, America.

Southeastern (1-0) won the tip and started strong with an early basket by Hailey Giaratano. The Lady Lions dominated the first quarter and managed to hold LSUA (0-3) to just four points in the opening ten minutes.

Freshman Jalencia “Jen” Pierre made her Southeast Hardwood debut with phenomenal play late in the first quarter, earning her first bucket as Lady Lion. The first quarter ended with Southeastern leading 15-4.

The second quarter started with a missed jump shot by Nathalie Kelly which was bounced by Alex Harrison. Harrison wouldn’t get the shot either because Alexis Horne bounced back. Finally, with 8:30 to go in the first half, Horne sinks in a three-pointer with an assist from Giaratano, making it 18-4.

As the first half drew to a close, Pierre was able to pull off a lay-up, after a successful jump and a lay-up from Lady Generals Harrison and Jewel Jones made it 29-8.

The half ended with a Raegan Ojoro turnover after a missed jump from Jaylen Huderson.

The second half started with LSUA Harrison shooting a three-pointer that ended up going off the rim. Southeastern quickly brought the ball downfield and took control of the ball with a quick layup from Taylor Bell with eight minutes left in the third quarter.

LSUA managed to get a field goal soon after, making it 40-14. The Lady Lions came back with a Bell volley at half court that resulted in an offensive foul. LSUA managed to get another bucket on the board, but nothing would stop the Lady Lions from scoring three-pointers, one being by Giaratano with three minutes and 19 seconds left in the third quarter.

Bell stole the ball and returned it to the Lady Lions which resulted in a successful field goal by Chrissy Brown with two minutes and a little change in the third. The score moved to a 31-point lead over the Lady Generals.

Daija Harvey scored a three-pointer, taking the lead to 53-16 with 45 minutes left in the third. Brown also sank a three-pointer with 20 seconds left in the third quarter.

In the first 30 seconds, Horne posted a two-pointer that was quickly answered with an LSUA layup, making it 60-40. Five minutes left in the game, freshman Allasia Washington made her first basket as Lady Lion, making it 68-22. The Lady Generals attempted to connect to the net but were unable to add anything to the score in the final four minutes of the fourth, until Jewel Jones made both foul shots, carrying the score at 68-24.

Washington managed to steal the ball and set it up with one minute and 51 seconds left in the game, taking the lead to a 45-point deficit for LSUA.

With a minute left, LSUA struggled to get a field goal to cut the deficit but couldn’t account for Southeastern’s impeccable defense in the paint. The Lady Generals managed to get a foul where Jones did both with just over 30 seconds left in the game.

Taylor Dupreea freshman in a red shirt, scored the last basket of the game for the Lady Lions, ending the game with a 73-27 victory, the first victory of the 2022-23 season for the sixth-year head coach Ayla Guzzardo.

“We shared the ball well, we had a lot of assists. We don’t want to play selfish and at times we played a bit too selflessly. We have to make sure we do the right thing with every possession .” Coach Guzzardo said when asked about his offense and his ability to get the points on the board.

The player of the match was Hailey Giaratano with 16 points, three assists, two steals and four rebounds. Horne came in second with 10 points, five assists and five rebounds.

Amani Gray led the LSUA with six points, four rebounds and one assist.
