TN’s Marlima Wins Best Transgender 2022 Award – The New Indian Express

VILLUPURAM: A Marlima Muralitharan, 53, from Villupuram, received the Best Transgender 2022 award from Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

The award presented by the Department of Social Welfare and Women’s Empowerment went to Gingee-based Marlima for her outstanding work in uplifting the third gender over the past 25 years. Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P Geetha Jeevan, Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu and officials from various departments attended the occasion.

Speaking to TNIE, Marlima Muralitharan said, “I completed my undergraduate studies in civil engineering in 1995 and started my career when transgender people struggled to be recognized. Now I run an office in Gingee, where we do construction business. helped 70 transgender people, who did not want to beg or get involved in the flesh trade.”

“I organized fruit juice shops, cows, goats and chickens for eight transpeople spending from my own pocket. I also organized jobs for many and helped three transpeople from Gingee, Kandachipuram and Tiruvannamalai to build their own house, giving away plans for free. and also organized funds for the construction. I think this award is a recognition of my services and will motivate me to do more,” added Marlima.
