Volleyball to host Illinois Friday on BTN and Maryland on Sunday

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers volleyball team are back home to start a four-game homestand starting with a BTN contest against Illinois on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. as well as a rematch with Maryland on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Both games will be played at the RAC and admission is free.

  • Friday against the Fighting Illini, head to the marketing table to enter to win an hour-long personal workout at Rutgers Recreation or a pair of Apple AirPods.
  • Visit the Sunday marketing table against the Terps and enter to win a bag of Rutgers loot including four (4) tickets to the Rutgers-Maryland football game on November 27.
  • Rutgers wrapped up a four-game road trip last Sunday, bringing Indiana to five sets in a 3-2 loss. Fifth year senior Beka Kojadinovic recorded 15 eliminations and 15 searches, classmate Kamila Cieslik added 11 kills and 16 digs and senior redshirt Shealyn mcnamara recorded 13 swinging kills. 435.
  • The Scarlet Knights opened the Big Ten roster with a tough schedule bringing together four Top 25 programs in their first six games and will face a team from Illinois who are the best team to receive votes this week in the AVCA poll. Top 25.
  • Over the season, Kojadinovic continues to lead the attack with 2.89 kills per set while adding 2.54 digs and 0.58 blocks per set for defense. She is the rally era leader in Ace with 99 in her “On The Banks” career and needs 18 more to smash Rutgers’ All-Time Top 10 list. She currently has 23 at the team lead for the 2021 season. Last season, she served 10 aces against Michigan State, setting a Rutgers record and tying the second-most game-play in Big Ten history.
  • Some of the best scarlet knights in attack are also Kamila Cieslik, who recorded their two double doubles this season against Indiana and are on average the second-best team with 2.09 kills per set and senior Anastasia Maksimova at 1.98 kills per stanza.
  • Senior red shirt Shealyn mcnamara is 10e among league blockers with 87 total rejections this season and 1.21 blocks per set. During her two “On The Banks” seasons, she placed her name second in career rally-era stats at 1.03 blocks per set.
  • Kojadinovic is also on the list of the top 10 career blockers of the rally era and currently ranks eighth in the category with 194 career rejections.
  • Second year Madyson Chitty, meanwhile, collects 3.63 digs per set for defense and in 22 games in two seasons, she has placed her name in fourth place in the rally era for career digs per set at 3.31.
  • Illinois are the best team to receive votes in this week’s AVCA poll and come to the RAC with an overall record of 14-7 and a 6-4 Big Ten score. The Fighting Illini defeated Northwestern and Michigan last week, 3-1, after being swept to No.9 Nebraska on Oct. 16.
  • Offensively, the Fighting Illini are led by Raina Terry with 3.16 kills per set and is one of three top ten team members in aces with 35 leading the team. She ranks fourth in the league in aces.
  • Illinois are also relying on Megan Cooney for offense with a second best team of 2.96 kills per set.
  • Diana Brown leads the offense for Illinois with 9.85 assists per set and ranks eighth in the Big Ten passer category.
  • In defense, Taylor Kuper is sixth in the conference with 4.27 digs per set and Kennedy Collins leads the net with 91 blocks overall with an average of 1.11 per set.
  • The Terps come to RAC to close the series of seasons coming into the week at 17-5 overall and 5-5 in the Big Ten game. Maryland will play at Penn State on Friday night before heading to New Jersey.
  • Maryland claimed three straight wins earlier this weekend, including a 3-0 win over Rutgers at College Park last Wednesday.
  • Maryland leads the nation in blocks with an average of 3.18 rejections per team set. At net, Rainelle Jones leads the nation in rejects with 1.81 saves per set and leads all Division I athletes with 132 blocks overall.
  • Jones is also the Terps’ third forward at 2.04 kills per set with Sam Csire adding 3.51 kills and Paula Neciporuka adding 2.92 kills per frame. Sydney Sowler sets the offense at 10.19 assists per set, placing sixth in the league in the category, while leading the Terps with 27 aces.
  • Milan Gomillion, meanwhile, leads the Big Ten with an average of 4.71 per set.
  • The Scarlet Knights return to College Ave. Gym in New Brunswick to host the State of Michigan on Friday, November 5 at 7 p.m. and Purdue on Sunday, November 7 at 1 p.m.
