Women United, a program provided by United Way of Lake & Sumter Counties, launched the “Power of the Purse” auction to fund scholarships for women and children. This Black Friday, the community is invited to buy for a cause and can bid until December 8. Buyers can visit https://app.galabid.com/uwls to start bidding or make a one-time donation to fund the scholarship program.
“Women United is made up of an inspiring group of local women leaders who have come together to focus on the critical need to provide women in the ALICE population with funds to continue their education,” said Monica Wofford, CEO of United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties.
“Our focus on graduate scholarships and college scholarships is a direct result of young women calling and visiting our office seeking to continue their education but not having the financial support to do so. Power of the Purse will help increase resources to meet this need. In the past few weeks alone, we have received donations from over 100 scholarships from local businesses and community partners. The outpouring of support is inspiring, ”said Michelle Dean, Director of Educational Programs, United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties.
Once a buyer selects an item and enters their highest bid, they will be prompted to create a free account on the GalaBid website. Auction winnings can be picked up at the United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties office, located at 32644 Blossom Lane, Leesburg, the week of December 13.
Proceeds from the auction support scholarships for women of all ages in the ALICE population to earn their GED or pursue all aspects of higher education. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed and is made up of individuals who work but struggle financially to make ends meet.
